Show A smart start A healthy breakfast is the tounda- i tion for a child's success in the education edu-cation process. Studies show that students who eat breakfast are able to concentrate longer and perform better on standardized tests. i Documentation shows lower rates of absenteeism and tardiness, as well as reduced incidence of ' morning illness. The most en- i couraging reports show that students are better behaved and thus ready to learn. Davis District School Food Service Ser-vice is sponsoring a "Smart Starts' Breakfast Week March 11-15 to stress the importance of a healthy breakfast. Currently, 33 elementary schools serve breakfast as part of the school foods program. Creative menus for the week include in-clude a hot and cold breakfast cereal bar, mini pizzas, and french toast with orange butter Secondary schools are joining the effort with a "Brunch for Lunch" Day March 11. Parents and community com-munity leaders are invited to join students for breakfast. In addition to the school foods fare, schools are participating with special classroom activities to teach what constitutes a healthy breakfast. A poster contest, "Start Smart with Breakfast" is being held in many of the schools. The project is made possible by a grant from the Florida Department of Citrus. Davis County School Food Service Ser-vice hopes that this program will educate students to eat breakfast, whether it be at home or as part of a school-sponsored program. |
