Le Mmon's intensity in the lane battling for both bounds and buckets kept Viewmont alive various times throughout the course of the game. I In spite of Le Mmon's play, this was a team-win if ever mere was one. Vikings Shannon Morrow and Natalie March ant backed Le Mmon with 10 apiece while Jennifer Jones and Mandy Miller tossed in 8 each. March ant came off the bench to replace an injured Jen Jones who went down in the third quarter with a knee injury and did not return for the duration. Jones' injury was the second of the night suffered by the Vikings. Nikki Bumham went down with 48 seconds left in the first period and was out for the rest of the game. The seriousness of either injury is yet to be seen; however, if either Viewmont hoopster is out today against Weber, the loss will be devastating dev-astating as the Vikes try to keep Weber from doing to them what they did to Bonneville - beat them three times consecutively. Schouten paced the Lakers with 13 followed by Suzy Hassell who ended the game with 12. Viewmont will face Weber today at 1:30 at Weber State's Dee Events Center. By TOM HARALDSEN BRIGHTON 43, VIEWMONT 34 SALT LAKE CITY The Viewmont High Lady Vikings saw their hopes for a state 4A girls' basketball championship fade away Wednesday night when Brighton High took a 42-34 victory in a second-round game. The loss dropped the Vikes into a Friday night consolation game, with Viewmont's best possible finish this season a fifth place finish. Viewmont played Bonneville last night. Against Brighton, the Vikes fell behind quickly, as Bengal Mamie Maxwell, part of a six-senior returning return-ing squad, drilled two straight three-pointers three-pointers to help Brighton assume a 13 lead. The Vikes had plenty of trouble early with Brighton's press, and the Bengals led 15-6 after one quarter. But Viewmont began to warm up in the second period. Senior Mandy Miller got hot from outside, hitting all three of her shots, two of them three-pointers. From an 1 8-8 deficit, the Vikes rallied to pull to within two at 20-18 with 33 seconds left in the half. Brighton's Racheal Jen sen hit a basket with two SEE VIKES ON A-12 Wednesday, couldn't get anything going against the defense-minded Vikes. Shannon Morrow played well in both Tuesday and Wednesday's games for Viewmont, which, with a victory last night, would play for fifth and seventh against the winner of Friday's American Fork-Weber, game on Saturday at 1 :30 p.m. free throw by Brighton's Joanna Barney with 17 seconds left was the only remaining score of the game after Jensen's heroics. Miller led Viewmont with 12 and Jones added 10, but the Lady Vikes shot just 42 percent from the field (15 of 36), while Brighton made 17 of 35 shots for 48 percent. Maxwell finished with 17 points for Brighton, which met Orem in a semifinal Friday night. VIEWMONT 48, TAYLORSVILLE 33 The Vikes rolled to an easy first-round first-round win over TaylorsvUle as Jones and Heather Le Mmon dominated the Warriors with 20 and 14 points respectively. Taylorsville, which dropped first-year first-year school Hunter in a second-round second-round consolation game on Vikes i CONTINUED FROM A-12 seconds left to send both teams off the floo with Brighton leading 24- : 20. Camille Lubeck and Annette Monsen scored the first two hoops of the second half for the Bengals, but again Viewmont fought back-Jennifer back-Jennifer Jones, held to just four points in the first half by Monsen's defense, took advantage of her absence due to foul trouble to score ; six points in the third quarter. As the final period began, a field goal by Miller cut the Brighton lead to 32-31 with 7:40 to go. Maxwell swung in a short jumper in the key, and then scored again to push the lead to 36-31. Viewmont fell back further when Maxwell scored again with 3:22 left. In fact, the Vikes went nearly five minutes between scores until Tippy Taggert's free throw with 3:07 left made it 38-32. The key call of the entire game, however, occurred in the third period. Jones was whistled for a questionable foul on Monsen by Jim Gilbert, a Softball umpire who somehow gets to do state games, and that changed the entire complexion com-plexion of the game. Monsen left with an injury for a four-minute stretch in the second half, but the Vikes could never regain their inside in-side game after Jones got into foul trouble. With the outside shooting having gone cold (Viewmont made just two of 1 1 shots in the final period), the Bengals were able to wrap up the win when Jensen converted a three-point play with 2:37 to go, pushing Brighton to a 41-34 lead.
