The new corhmunication system became necessary almost prior to its projected time when the company the county contracted with went bankrupt several months ago. Though the present system is still functioning, there is no backup service ser-vice if a breakdown occurs. Consequently, the . commissi on voted to install a new communication communica-tion system in the existing courthouse court-house and contract for a compatible system for the jail complex still uniter t orrstiuc tioit. AT&T was awarded the contract based on cost, service ability and the J h state's recommendation of the system, which is currently in use by ' state entities. : Rather than adopting a new contract con-tract with AT&T, the county has "piggy backed" onto the state cortr tract for the purchase of the equipment. equip-ment. The arrangement should help hold the cost down. j Commissioner Robert Rose voiced voic-ed concern that there is not a general gen-eral statement attached to the documents for equipment purchase stating what the county expects to have in the end. : "If you've got an airplane instead in-stead of an automobile when you put all these parts together, we're in - trouble," he said. "We should have a general description of what we expect it to do when it's finished." : Another concern expressed by the board was the inevitable unforeseen unfore-seen costs that always seem to pop up with large projects. VerNon Griffcth revealed one of SEE PHONE PG. A-4 Phone CONT. FROM PGA1 those costs that could be planned on in the future. 'When we make the move to the fa new courthouse, some of us will be staying here," he said. "But, we don't know exactly who will stay, or which stations will have to be left. We can plan on some cost when we have to move some of those." When the issue of whether to accept ac-cept an extended warranty on the equipment came before the board, Rose commented that it was a sub ject that had not come up before, and because one of the members was absent, it might be a good idea to table the entire contract until Wednesday. Commission Chairman Gayle Stevenson agreed, and the contract was held over. As a last informational note to the gallery, Rose explained that a public hearing that had been planned for Oct. 18 to hear the results of the committee studying the paramedic program had been postponed. "The committee requested an- other 30 days to complete the study," he said. "We'll reschedule that meeting as soon as the committee com-mittee is finished. |
