Brimley, Simmons and Terry Hansen were neck and neck until the last putt fell. After a moment of confusion, Brimley realized that she had won her first State Amateur first place trophy, shooting a 74 on the day. "I can't believe this," gasped the elated Brimley. "I've been in this tournament for the last 1 0 years. ' ' "This is the best day of my life," continued Brimley. "Well, the second se-cond best," she corrected herself referring to her marriage to golfer Mike Brimley just over a year ago. Simmons, a BYU golfer who will be a senior this year, had led the - pack for the first two days of the with a narrow lead over Brimley. First place finally came down to the last hole. For a moment it looked look-ed like Brimley had lost the match when her chip shot, the third shot on the par five hole, fell 3 feet short of the green. "I knew it would all depend on that missed chip," said Brimley. "I knew we were close, but I didn't know exactly how close." However, luck was on her side as a similar chip shot that did hit the green, left Simmons 20 feet from the pin. Simmons missed her next two shot and bogeyed the hole. On her next chip-shot attempt, Brimley managed to leave herself three feet from the hole, a putt she made easily. Brimley, who lives in Salt Lake, said that this was the first time she had gone into the match without really trying to win. I just played for fun. In fact, this is the first individual tournament I've played in this year," explained Brimley. Her nonchalant style of play did not dull the excitement of winning the one tournament that, according to Brimley, she has really wanted to win for over a decade. "This title is, to me, the most important I really wanted this title, and now I've got it To me, that's a great accomplishment. "I'm so excited; I'm shaking," laughed Brimley. "I can't believe this. "I just wanted to play the course and shoot a respectable score; that made all the difference. I love this course. It's short, but I like it." Brimley's three-day total for the tournament was 224. Simmons and Hansen tied for second place honors one stroke behind Brimley with scores of 225. Robin Barry's three-day total of 228 clinched her third place in the championship flight's gross scoring division. The tournament featured women golfers from throughout Utah. Participants were divided into four flights depending on the golfer's handicap. Each flight was then divided into two scoring categories, gross and net. Net scoring scor-ing subtracts the golfer's handicap from hisher total for the round. The championship flight featured golfers with a handicap of 0 to 13. The winners in the net division were Joyce Billings with a score of 206, Bountiful's Kerry Fenwick, 206 and a tie for third between Melanie Warren and Starla Yamada. Both scored a 231.
