Show City tennis boasts four undefeated teams By G.BRETT HART BOUNTIFUL Bountiful little league tennis has finished its season with four out of its five teams boasting undefeated seasons in league play. In the senior league, both of Bountiful's flight two teams finished fin-ished undefeated. Bountiful's flight one team, was edged out of the first place spot and ended the season in second. In junior league play, both of Bountiful a B and C teams went undefeated. Little league tennis is divided into two main groups: the senior league, ages 14 to 18 and the junior league, ages 13 and under. The senior leagues are then divided into flights according to the skill levels of the athletes involved, flight one being the best, flight two being slightly less experienced and flight three including novice and beginning tennis players. Junior leagues are divided similarly; simi-larly; however, teams are known as A 'B' and 'C 'A being the most experienced. Both senior and junior teams are comprised of first and second singles players and doubles teams, similar to the traditional fust and second strings in other organized sports. According to team coach Jack Senninger, because his senior teams were fairly experienced, he opted to create a single flight one team and two flight two teams. Senninger is also the tennis coach at Bountiful High School. Although sponsored by the Bountiful Boun-tiful City Recreation Center, the teams are comprised of athletes from Layton, Farmington, Center-ville Center-ville and Bountiful. Senninger, said that his team's success was due in part to the fact it got an early jump on some of the other teams. "We had already put our teams together and had practiced for two weeks when league play began," said Senninger. "Some of the others were still putting their teams together. ' Bountiful's flight one team consisted con-sisted of Alex Lawrence, first singles; and Rob Kelly, second singles; John Bumingham and Rhett Neuenschwonder, first doubles; and Paul Miner and Rich Moore, playing second doubles. David Senninger and Ben Anger served as substitutes. Flight one saw action against teams such as Canyon Racquet, Salt Lake Swim and Tennis, Sports Mall, Virginia Heights and Keams. Bountiful's flight one team was edged out of first place by Keams. The first flight two team consisted con-sisted of first and second singles, David Senninger and Ben Anger; first doubles, David McKinley and Kevin Eubank; and second doubles, Amy Westergard and Hedi Westergard. This team was unbeaten un-beaten and untied during the course of the season and faced opponents from Willow Creek, Olympus Hills. Salt Lake Swim and Tennis, Magna Recreation, Ogden Sports Mall and Canyon Racquet. The second flight two team featured Vicky Wood, Bryce Bradshaw, Amanda Shelton, Eric Chamberlain, Devon Gibby, Rob Fox, Brad Knoles and Nanette Cook. This team was unbeaten, but tied Pepperwood in a July 9 match. This flight two team faced teams from Salt Lake, Park City, Pepper-wood, Pepper-wood, North Canyon, Cottonwood M e Heights, Olympus Hills and Willow Creek. The junior league 'B tearr : was made up of Tim Smolka, first singles and Justin Allen, second singles. The team also featured Brett Kossin, Ryan Bell, Dave Lid- : die, Bill Fox, Chris Clayton and : Mark Chamberlain who alternated ; in the doubles positions. The 'B team went undefeated in play against Fountain of Youth, Tooele, North Canyon, Salt Lake, Virginia Heights and Fort Douglas. f Scott Senninger and Jordan ; Jensen headed up the C team in ' the first singles spots. The team also featured Ben Lawrence, Brock Blackner, Travis Jacobs, Matt and Ryan Davis, Ryan Kimball, Tom Mendenhall and R.J. Oswald. The 'C team went undefeated in play against Sports Mall, Canyon Racquet, Liberty Path, Cottonwood, Salt Lake, Fort Douglas and Willow Creek. 4 |
