Show Indians find strength in numbers There is strength in numbers, and Utah American Indians can strengthen their numbers by making sure they are counted in the upcoming upcom-ing 1990 census. A complete and accurate count means greater political politi-cal and economic power for American Indians. The 1990 census is especially important to American Indians because it determines representation. representa-tion. An accurate count of the Indian In-dian population means fair representation rep-resentation in the U.S. House of Representatives as well as at state and local levels. The census count also affects the drawing of local political district boundaries. Funding is also a factor. More than $38 billion in federal funds are distributed every year to all kinds of programs, money for schools, JXPA, Indian health, child care, social programs, reservations and urban centers. Tribal planners, private businesses busi-nesses and governments at all levels use census information to follow trends, make critical planning choices and detennine where social services are needed. |
