But when it was suggested that, since the store is located between the lake on the west and the woods on the east, the new name should be 4 'Lakewoods. And the name stuck. Union Furniture was changed to Lakewoods Home Furnishings because the store offers much more than just furniture, explained Dell R. Holbrook, co-owner and president presi-dent of the store. The family-owned store first opened its doors in Bountiful in 1905 when the Holbrook-S medley families bought the Thomas Furniture Fur-niture and Casket Company on the site of the present store, 70 North Main. The co-owners-Ira and Mark C. Holbrook and Frank S medley -moved a two-story building from Salt Lake City to the site, tripling the size of the existing building. Thomas Furniture was the first furniture retail business in Bountiful, Boun-tiful, but the Holbrooks and Smedleys were determined to be "bigger and better." About 10 years later, the combined combin-ed furniture store and mortuary united with Davis County Furniture Store and became Union Furniture and Mortuary. X; if Lakewoods, a family-owned home furnishings store on Bountiful main street, has been in business for over ' 80 years.
