By TOM HARALDSEN SALT LAKE CITY-Viewmont High was prepared to begin the 4-A state girls' basketball tournament Monday night, taking on Cottonwood Cotton-wood in an 8:10 p.m. game. The status of the tournament is somewhat up in the air due to the possibility of a teachers' strike. The Vikings clinched the Region One regular season title last week, edging Bonneville 56-53 in a battle of the top two teams. Viewmont built a slow but steady lead, and was up by seven entering the game's final minute before a Laker overall. Woods Cross was led by Amy Turman with 11 and Dawn Britton with nine. The Lady Wildcats also suffered a 70-51 loss to Tooele on Tuesday, despite 16 from Britton and 12 each from Turman and Maggie Allen. Woods Cross is now 7-5 in league and 8-10 overall. Bountiful travels to Jordan Tuesday Tues-day and hosts Judge in a possible title ti-tle showdown on Thursday, while Woods Cross hopes to secure a state tournament berth by hosting Murray on Tuesday and Jordan on Thursday. Meanwhile, in Region Six, Bountiful Boun-tiful clinched at least a tie for the league title with a pair of wins las' week, dropping Murray 54-41 and beating Woods Cross 59-44. Against Murray, the Braves were up just 23-18 at halftime before pulling away to victory. Maegan Mac Kay continued to put up the big numbers, scoring 22 points. Nikki Hanni added 1 1 and Allison Drown 10 for Bountiful. The Lady Braves avenged their only league loss of the year on Friday, Fri-day, beating Woods Cross on the Wildcats' floor. Bountiful led 29-18 at halftime, then kept Woods Cross at bay the rest of the way. MacKay was again dominant, scoring 25 points. Hanni added 14 and Drown 12 for the Braves, who are now 11-1 in league and 15-3 |
