FLACK Editor's Note: Members of the Bountiful Birthday Gift Citizen's Committee, and other Bountiful residents have submitted a number of articles which chronicle chroni-cle a part of Bountiful's history, and offer suggestions, and an in- vitation to join the city's centennial centen-nial celebration by giving a "Bountiful" birthday gift These stories comprise the second in a two-part series. A superbly framed 1900 map of Bountiful is now on display at the Bountiful City HalL The map, researched re-searched and designed by 93-year-old Florence Foy, is her gift to Bountiful. The frame is compliments com-pliments of Mac's Hobbies and Crafts, 2135 S. Orchard Drive. Gordon Curl, head framer, accepted the challenge of creating an artistic compliment to the valuable map. "We are honored to be able to present this gift," said Mr. Curl. The map is available at Can-Stationery, Can-Stationery, Seagull Book and Tape, Sam Weller's Bookstore, Senior Citizens Center, and BountifulDavis Boun-tifulDavis Art Center. Handling the maps is part of their gift to Bountiful. Boun-tiful. All proceeds go to the Centennial Committee to help fund the many events of the city's one-hundredth one-hundredth birthday celebration. Mrs. Foy, who was bom in Bountiful, Boun-tiful, is one of its oldest residents. In creating this gift, she drew upon her 55 years of genealogical research and her vast reservoir of memories and contacts. With these assets she went to work, searching the 1900 U.S. Census Records, as well as all other original records from historical societies, civil records, abstracts of property, and family records. Mrs. Foy sent letters and made countless personal interviews and phone calls. Her masterpiece is now a guide to all who live or have lived in Bountiful. This map, fascinating to youth, should be in every Davis County school. "A picture is worth a thousand words." Through this picture, students will leam the history and progress of this area. In Bountiful, few streets were named in 1900. House numbers were not used until 1940. So far as can be determined, Mrs. Foy's map is the only map of Bountiful between be-tween 1850 and 1938. "Maps are the foundation of history," says Mrs. Foy. "They are the key to gathering information and writing family records." Her service, insight and generosity generosi-ty are a model for othersyoung and oldto follow. German-born Bert Balzer has braved the elements and climbed to the top of Bountiful Peak a number of times to make sure his gift to Bountiful is just right. Balzer has erected a flag and a tribute to honor the city. |
