It seems the city government found out that women were actually ac-tually putting off having a family fami-ly because they feared losing their job. That should not have come as a surprise. Women all across America are afraid of losing their jobs. In Utah the majority of the female work force is of child bearing age and there are many employers who do not have job protection for their female employees who become pregnant. Dade County Commissioners were 'dismayed by tales of working women who have delayed motherhood, quit good jobs or declared bankruptcy because of family emergency," said an Associated Press news story. The county acted by requiring companies with 50 or more employees to offer a 90-day unpaid un-paid leave every two, years to employees for childbirth, adoption adop-tion or serious illness involving the employee or close relative. In Utah employers are not mandated by law to provide a family-leave policy. Some government agencies and large businesses do offer some terms of leave to their workers. Some employers complain that offering leave would cripple a company. Others complain that mandating a leave policy just puts one more level of 9 government interference in the free-enterprise system. The problem is, there is no solution. Government involvement in-volvement has created much of the problem which puts both mother and father in the work force. Taxes take a large portion of most employees' wages. That, coupled with the fact that wages have not kept up with inflation, in-flation, leaves less and less expendable ex-pendable family income. Few couples have the option of having mom stay at home while dad goes to work. Moms have been forced out of the home. We agree that it is wrong to have to pass a law forcing employers to allow humanitarian humani-tarian treatment of their employees, but why don't they do it on their own? r |
