McFarland said, "As parents of children- with severe learning disabilities, Linda and I are extremely ex-tremely grateful for the service that our organization provides. This conference gives us all a chance to come together as people with a common bond-the development and growth of our children and the continued support of our adults with learning disabilities, it gives us the opportunity to hear and .discuss differing viewpoints. It provides a network and support system for all - of . us-from those who are - just - suspecting that their children have learning difficulties to those of us who have been functioning in our schools, programs, and society with ' these difficulties." The Learning Disabilities Association of Utah (formerly Utah Association for Children and Adults with Learning Disabilities UACLD) announced its 1989 annual an-nual conference. This event will be held on Saturday, Oct 28, at Orson Spencer Halt on the University of Utah Campus. Linda Smith and Susan McFarland will serve as co-chairwomen co-chairwomen of this conference. - They will present to parents, professional pro-fessional educators, and service providers alike topics that will hopefully create and stimulate the formation of new ideas. The theme for the conference is "Differences to Celebrate" and the keynote speaker is Suzanne Stevens, a well-known well-known author, researcher, and presenter in the( field of learning disabilities. Topics will address information regarding pre-school, elementary, and post-secondary age groups. They will include such themes as meeting emotional needs, improving improv-ing self-esteem, time and organization organiza-tion management, language intervention, in-tervention, teaching strategies, whole-brain integration, research implication, early childhood intervention, in-tervention, and transition. STEVENS tions will explore how to diagnose and define specific strengths and limitations of children and adults with learning disabilities, as well as 1 how the State of Utah currently ; classifies children for services.
