Show ' Board of Health appoints two new members The Davis County Board of Health recently selected two new 1 appointees to fill the vacancies of outgoing board members. Ap-pointed Ap-pointed to the Board were Joy M. i Erickson and, Dr. Douglas B. Nielson, both of whom are residents of Bountiful. Mrs. Joy Erickson has been a resident of Davis County for approximately ap-proximately four years. She received receiv-ed a bachelor's degree in Education and Social Sciences from Kent State University, Ohio and is a former director of marketing and admissions for a skilled . nursing facility. Currently, she is working on a part-time basis for a public relations re-lations firm. Erickson possesses an interest in a variety of health related issues and topics. One particular need that she ' noted in the community was that of facilitating the education that takes place in the schools with corresponding cor-responding education in the community com-munity setting. "We need a more supportive environment en-vironment in which to make healthier choices" noted Erickson. In addition Erickson emphasized a need to focus more on the preventative preven-tative aspects of health, particularly in areas such as nutrition and tobacco prevention. "Supermarkets could do much to encourage appropriate nutrition, with appropriate food labeling," stated Erickson, "Schools can enhance choices by offering more nutritious meal selections and providing pro-viding healthier alternatives in vending ven-ding machines." Erickson hopes to actively contribute con-tribute to the Board in coming years. Currently, Erickson resides in Bountiful with her husband William and their two children. Dr. Douglas Nielson has been a pediatrician in private practice in Bountiful since 1980. In addition, he has served as an attending physi-cianinstructor physi-cianinstructor at Primary Children's Hospital and secretary of the Jntcrmountain Pediatrics Society. Socie-ty. Dr. Nielsen has been involved in extensive volunteer service, functioning func-tioning as a representative for credential ing at the University of Utah and as a volunteer physician at Boy Scout of America camps. Nielsen believes that the county must prepare to deal with several health related issues in the future, particularly in the area of environmental envir-onmental health. "We need to consider con-sider how we are going to deal with problems such as waste disposal, contamination and the transportation transporta-tion of hazaiiious materials on our interstate," noted Nielsen. "In addition, ad-dition, 1 think we need to take a closer look at how we arc reimbursing reimburs-ing our health department staff for the excellent service "they"" perform." per-form." Nielson describes Davis County as a haven to live in and credits the health department for their responsiveness respon-siveness and direct approach in meeting the needs of the community. communi-ty. At present, Nielson resides in Bountiful with his wife Carol and their four children. |
