"I have always enjoyed music and I have consistently sung in various f school, community and church groups," Mr. Tuten said. "The . Choir broadcast was 'uplifting. The music and the messagiven by the incomparable Richard L. Evans left you with an inspirational feeling.. Because of the Choir, I had no negative experiences regarding Mormons." Mr. Tuten joined the LDS Church in 1971 and moved to Bountiful in 1974. He started taking voice lessons with the goal Elder Denis W. This happwied when another Bountiful .Choir -member, Vern Jones, heard Mr. Tuten sing. "Why don't you try out for the Choir. Yovr have a beaitiful voice and the Choir is looking for second basses," Mr. Jones told Mr. Tuten. Eight years and hundreds of rehearsals, .Sunday morning broadcasts broad-casts and concerts later'," Mr. Tuten and Mr. Jones are both retired from the Choir, a result of a policy adopted by Conductor Gerald Ot-tley Ot-tley that Choir members can serve ' 20 years or until they reach the age of 60. 7 "Overwhelming," is the best way to describe how Mr. Tuten felt when he started singing with the choir. "I found myself sitting among the members, hearing the organ, singing the most beautiful major choral works in the wprld. I knew T was part of something great," Mr. Tuten said. It took him six months to feel comfortable with his Choir calling. Singing in the Choir is more time consuming than most people realize. real-ize. In addition to the regular two hour rehearsals every Thursday and Sundayrthe Choir often practices Tuesday evenings and at other times when they are preparing for a concert. "Guesrtists and conductors conduc-tors are amazed that we are able to prepare for a weekly half hour radio broadcast and for concerts and special programs. The Choir is really real-ly a unique . organization," Mr. Tuten noted. , - - Although it would be impossible to pick one special, unforgettable experience with the ' Choir, Mr. Tuten said probably his favorite performance was singing Mendelssohn's VElijah" in die Grand fetons."
