Show - Of the people, by . people , ;& for th people??r Recent Supreme Cotjrt decisions have left us wondering if c'rc being given too many freedoms. Of course it is the duty I 1 1 the court to uphold our constitutional rights, but are we go- , :,.g too far? '"'"V - " ' It is hard to imagine; thM when: Francis Scott Key was-in flred lo write "The SfarSpangJed Banner," the words that Americans liave adopted al their national anthem, he envi-. envi-. Moncd that someday that sjjbie banner would be burneM. in ui -.respect and that the action vbufd be upheld by the courts. It is hard to imagine that oh soldiers and heroes fought to ...seie the "home of the brav&ancfthe land of the free" just i. cc its symbol, that they revered during combat, become nothing nioie than a symbol of a protest. Does the nation's flag of freedom have no more significance than the bras that were burned by women's libbers? If the desecration of the flag is ndw upheld by the courts, should we no longer use it as a symbol o honor, should it be eliminated from the coffins of our Wrjes, and the grave sites of our war dead? Do we forego any flag raising ceremonies, and will the flag flown at half mast in respect for the dead be a i i edition of the past? A quirk of our forefathers? Moving on to theewly guaranteed light to use indecent language on the telephone, nothing obscene mind you, just indecent. in-decent. In the past, many people have filedXcomplaints with the telephone company because they have received Indecent phone caiis. The company would then take measures to identify iden-tify the perpetrator. Apparently, there isj.now .a place in America lor all sexual perverts to be employed. The obscene : phone callers of yesterday, that the telephony company tried so hard lo identify, are now gainfully employed as sextalk artists and their right to be there is guaranteed by the" Supreme Court; they just have to be sure to edit out any reference to ; anatomically torrect terminology. The Supreme Court has also ruled that in America, the same tccris that are struggling to learn how to drive are old enough to be killed as criminals. They may not have the right to vote, but they have the right to die. J Somehow, we believe that 16-year-olds do not possess the mental capacity to choose the leaders of the country, or to enlist in the armed services, or to buy a car without a cosigner, or to purchase cigarettes, or to attend an R-rated movie, but the " Supreme Court can guarantee their right to pay for their crimes with theiriives. ' ' We believe in an America that guarantees a government of the people.-for the people, and by the people. Have these nine justices divorced themselves from this ideal? ' ' God bless America, land that we love, stand beside her and guide her,". ..please. |
