Show Rams utilize Davis mistakes to earn share of league title '-; By GARY R. BLODGETT SALT LAKE CITY Two Highland scores one in the opening open-ing seconds of the game and 'I : another in the final seconds of the f. first half were all that was needed for the Rams to upset the 'x. . Davis High Darts, 18-6, in Region Four football action Thursday night at Highland. But it was more than an upset win over the Darts, it also knocked the Kaysville eleven out of the undisputed un-disputed championship of Region Re-gion Four and left three teams deadlocked for the division title Davis, Highland and Woods Cross. A flip of the coin was to determine deter-mine the first, second and third place finishes of the three teams, all with 4-1 region records. (See separate story of coin flip and play-' off schedule.) Highland scored first on its third play from scrimmage with the Rams' first possession a 60-yard romp by fullback David Brown down the left, sidelines. Then just before the half with only 10 seconds remaining Brown again scored on a one-yard plunge. It was a great defensive battle with only a few lapses. But both teams took advantage of those lapses and broke away for long runs and tiifty passes. Punts were plentiful, as were the penalties, and it was the latter that really hurt the Darts. Davis took the opening kickoff and looked good on its first series of plays, moving across midfield with precision. But the Rams' defense de-fense stiffened and Davis punted to the Rams' 20. Highland quarterback Brad Harris Har-ris pulled a nifty QB keeper and scampered 15 yards to his left. ' Brown plunged five yards up the middle and then the stocky, hard-running hard-running fullback showed what he was really made of speed as well as power as he skirted left end and outraced the Davis defense 60 yards for the score. The Darts blocked the point-after point-after attempt and it was 6-0 for the Rams until the waning seconds of the first half. Highland's second and game winning score came with only 10 seconds left to play in the first half. Battling the clock, and trying to move downfield from their own 27-yard 27-yard line, the Rams faced a fourth and one situation with just one minute mi-nute remaining in the half. A punt seemed like the safe thing to do. But a Davis defenseman got a little too close to the kicker and barely brushed him. The referee hesitated and then threw the flag for roughing the kicker. This gave the Rams new life and outraged the Darts. Harris rushed another QB keeper keep-er to the Dart 38 and Danny Katoa picked up another six yards on a pitchout. The Rams lucked out again when a deadball foul was called cal-led against the Darts for an out-of-bounds hit and the ball was moved to the Davis eight. Brigham Black scampered around right end to the Darts' one-yard one-yard line with only 15 seconds left in the half. Brown then carried it over to put the Rams ahead 12-0 at the intermission after a two-point conversion failed. - Davis threatened twice in the third period only to have Highland's High-land's Rob Howe intercept a pass on the 19 and then the Ram defense held and took possession on the 23-yard line. During the latter possession, pos-session, the Davis quarterback was sacked twice for long losses. Again in the fourth period the Darts threatened to score before they finally pushed the ball into the end zone with 3:09 left in the game on a pass from Jake Davis to end Jeff Nicolai who gathered in the oval in the end zone after outpacing his defenders. The two-point conversion con-version was no good. |
