Show Final games set Braves-Viking battle highlights action ter. But Ogden answered with a two yard run by Jeff White with 3:48 left in the half, and then, following fol-lowing an interception, struck again on a 26 yard pass from quarterback quar-terback Aaron Price to take a 14-7 halftime lead. The Tigers scored again on their second offensive play of the third quarter when White rambled 68 yards for a TD. Woods Cross kept coming back in the final period, as Chad Rawlings hit Shaun Culli-more Culli-more for a 10 yard TD at the 5:00 mark. That pass was set up by a 64 yard drive, including passes of 26 yards to Shaun Stephenson and 20 yards to Cullimore. But Ogden stopped a late Wildcat attempt to win the score. CLEARFIELD 33 BOUNTIFUL 22 At Bountiful, the Falcons were more ready than the host Braves for the short-week game. Mike Bearnson scored on a five yard run early, and Bob Erickson kicked a 45 yard field goal, but the rest of the Braves' scoring was on defense. ; ;5 - ' . , t ; , ?' Y, : , i I 1 i jii ! K . ' i ... Bountiful played without senior quarterback Burke Smith, who was injured in the Woods Cross game and is out for the season. BRIGHTON 50 VIEWMONT 14 At Viewmont, the Bengals exploded ex-ploded during a physical second half, taking advantage of penalties and Viking turnovers to bury Viewmont. The Vikes started well, as Sean Ihler returned the game's opening kickoff to the Brighton 47. Five plays later, Ihler scored from the seven after quarterback Gary Leatham had hit Lee Flandro with a 22 yard pass to set it up. Leatham then hit Jeff Graves with a two-point two-point conversion pass, making it 8-0 for the hosts. Q By halftime, the Bengals had built a 21-8 lead, however. On Viewmont's first possession of the second half, Leatham hit Flandro again for a 21 yard score, but a failed two-point attempt left the score at 21-14. From there, it was all downhill, as Brighton ran up its highest point total of the season. By TOM HARALDSEN Sports Editor Eleven weeks of preparation and play will come to a head this Thursday, Thurs-day, when the regular high school football season comes to an end. All three Region Four matchups this week have playoff overtones, as Woods Cross visits East at 3:30 p.m., while Davis travels to Highland High-land and Bountiful heads to Viewmont View-mont tonight. Here's a look: WOODS CROSS (6-2) at EAST (0-8): On paper, this looks like a mismatch, but the Leopards nearly beat Hillcrest last week, and are always tough at home. Woods Cross should be at nearly full strength for this game, as coach John Haning rested a few people during last week's non-league loss at Ogden. The biggest question mark is still the Wildcats' offense, or lack of it. Again last week, the defense scored one of the two Woods Cross TD's. There seems to be enough offensive talent, but it's yet to jell. The Wildcats can earn a share of the league title if they win and Highland beats Davis, plus need to gain some momentum for next week's state playoffs. Prediction: Woods Cross 14 East 10, DAVIS (6-2) at HIGHLAND (6-2): (6-2): A very important game, for a Davis win gives the Darts the title outright, and moves Highland to a third place finish. The Rams are tough, but have letdowns at times, while Davis is stronger than it looked in last week's loss at Roy. I'd love to go with the local school here, but I'm afraid the Rams want a piece of their third straight league title, and they're playing at home. BOUNTIFUL (2-6) at VIEWMONT VIEW-MONT (2-6): This should be a great game, and, as was the case last year when Bountiful pulled it out at the very end, the winner earns a first-round state berth while the loser is done for the year. Certainly Bountiful will miss quarterback Burke Smith, whose experience was lost for the year in a loss to Woods Cross two weeks ago. Junior Jeff Casper has stepped in, and has the capability to lead the Braves. Viewmont hasn't forgotten for-gotten that game last year, but the Vikes looked flat in the second half against Brighton last week.-; Perhaps they were looking ahead. This is the fourth year I've covered co-vered high school football in Bountiful, Boun-tiful, and I've never seen the Vikes beat the Braves. But then again, I've already seen some things this year that I've never seen before. Prediction: Viewmont 21 Bountiful 20 (and I think it will be that close, either way). In games played last Wednesday, Wednes-day, during the short UEA week: ROY 27 DAVIS 14 At Roy, the surprising Royals moved to 7-1 with a mild upset over Davis. The Darts fell behind 13-0 before Carl Gardiner hauled in a 36 yard pass from quarterback Jake Davis. Aaron Rasmussen's PAT made it 13-7 midway through the second quarter, but Roy scored again before the half and led 19-7 at intermission. Gardiner scored again from the two in the third quarter, and Rasmussen's Ras-mussen's PAT made it 19-14, but Roy scored early in the final quarter, quar-ter, and the Royals held on for the win. OGDEN 21 WOODS CROSS 13 At Ogden, the Tigers handed Woods Cross its second defeat of the season while improving themselves them-selves to 6-2. Woods Cross scored first on a 34-yard interception return re-turn by Todd Fuller to take a 7-0 lead with 2:46 left in the first quar- 1 Strong performances like those of Mark Johansen (far left) and Ryan Anderson (second from left), along with their teammates team-mates from Viewmont, made the Vikings the prohibitive favorite favo-rite for the boys' region title this afternoon. |
