Show SDJH teacher takes Berkeley course Paul Lombardi, a teacher at South Davis Junior High School has just completed a month of intensive in-tensive studies in science at the University of California at Berkeley. The Institute S4ST, Science for Teachers, funded by the National Science Foundation, enables 50 teachers from around the United States to attend lectures in the biological and physical sciences, given by teaching award winning University science department faculty. fa-culty. Glenn Seaborg, one of Berkeley's Ber-keley's Nobel laureate professors and discoverer of 12 elements on the Periodic Table, was one of the instructors with the program. These lectures were followed by extensive laboratory activities specially spe-cially designed for the program, which taught such basics as glass blowing, safety techniques, and working with liquid nitrogen. At Berkeley's Lawrence Hall of Science, participants were introduced intro-duced to an extensive "library" of computer programs to be used either in the classroom or as tutorials. tuto-rials. Field trips to see the redwoods, red-woods, the San Andreas fault, and the elephant seals broadened the educational experience. The program, directed by Professor Profes-sor George C. Pimentel, Professor of Chemistry, is staffed by a unique partnership of master secondary school teachers and University science sci-ence faculty. |
