Show Dear John Letters By John Waterbury Dear John: I'm a teacher and when I look at this "Plop Plop Fizz Fizz Society" we live in, I really get concerned for the kids. When they come to school, they talk about all the alcohol and drugs their parents take. On a regular basis, we even find, drugs they bring from their medicine cabinets that belong to their parents. Is it any wonder that kids think they shouldn't have to experience experi-ence any pain or problems in life. They're taught at home that all the answers are in a pill or a bottle. J'm afraid our future and theirs is in jeopardy. Irritated In Evansville Dear IE: Most parents are unaware of their teaching influence on their children. And even worse, they fail to see their children as potentially significant contributors. Abraham Lincoln recognized recog-nized this principle when he wrote, "A child is a person who is going to carry on what you have started. He is going to sit where you are sitting, and when you are gone, attend to those things which he thinks are important. You may adopt all the policies you please, but how they are carried out depends on him. He will assume control of your cities, states, and nations. He is going to move in and take over your churches, schools, universities, univer-sities, and corporations. ..the fate of humanity is in his hands." i |
