Show Uies to fry WAC rebound The big Aggie center, who should probably be listed in the "who's who of rebounders," is currently the top board man in the conference con-ference averaging 14.5 takedowns a game. The CSU super transfer is Rick Fisher who played his junior college ball, a little while back, with pro basketball's traveling man Spencer Hayward. Fisher is number one in scoring in the conference dropping in 23.5 points a game. He is also number three in rebounding, while Childress Child-ress is number three in scoring. With two players like this plus three more veterans of the hardcourt hard-court who know where it's at, CSU is going to be tough. Utah is in good shape physically, physi-cally, and if the Utes are ever going to be up for two games, these two are the ones. Both should be good. fv W (if Ml i S..J,.jr"3sr. .. ...... : "w. . i ' i , M. 'I . L ' j BY BRUCE WOODBURY Asst. Sports Editor The 1971 version of the Wes-( Wes-( tern Athletic Conference (WAC) basketball race is under way, but no one in his right mind would have predicted that such 1 "preseason "pre-season patsies" as UTEP and Wyoming would be leading at this point. ; But they are-both with 2-0 records, and the two teams picked by the "experts " to win the crown, Utah and Arizona, are both solidly in last place and have yet to pick up a conference win. After this weekend however, the standings may be radically changed, in Utah's case, they hope for the better. After five straight games on the road, the Utes are finally playing at home this weekend. It is a good thing too because both opponents are tough. On Friday conference leader Wyoming comes to town followed by Colorado State on Saturday : night. Both games begin at 8 p.m. . at the Sports and Speical Events Center. Wyoming must be considered : the surprise of the conference. : Picked down the list by pre-season pollsters, the Pokes hold WAC : wins over tough Arizona State 89-81 and Arizona 91-65. Both of these games were played at Laramie, so the Wyoming road : strength is unknown. On paper though, they should be good enough to play before the prime minister of Israel, in Tel-Aviv. Tel-Aviv. Leading the Cowboy attack is 6-10 Jerry Brucks. Brucks is coach Bill Stranigan's answer to last year's super center Carl Ashley. . A junior college transfer, the big .man is making the transition to major college ball very well "averaging over 20 points a game. " He is closely followed by guard Willie Roberson who scores . 19.4 ' points per outing. The affair will be a wild one as all Utah-Wyoming games are and should prove exciting if the Utes are back in form after their latest disasters. Colorado State comes to town Saturday night bringing with them : four veterans and a super transfer. Most awsome of the returning lettermen is 6-9 Mike Childress. Rick Fisher of Colorado State will plague the Redskins on the boards and in the scoring column when the Rams play the Utes Saturday night. |
