Show l fcfo& now cnmysl "No Dice"-Badfmger (Apple): Probably Pro-bably the reason the Beatles signed this group to their record label is that they play "Beatle" music- simple, tight and melodic with a lot of harmony. Badfinger wrote all of the tunes on this album-this is a very promising group. There are four of them (bass, drums, guitar and keyboard.) "Crowfoot" (Paramount): I really like this album. Crowfoot is mostly the work of one person-Russel Da Shiell. He wrote the tunes, sang lead and backup and played guitars, bass and keyboards, His songs and arrangements are very musical. "Ballin' Jack" (Columbia): The radio ad says this is Columbia's latest super group. Maybe. I like them a lot better than Chicago. Only six guys but between them they know about a dozen instruments-the horn arrangements arrange-ments are especially good. It's a pretty tight group. The songs are not all that exceptional, but vocals and arrangements arrange-ments are really fine. "False Start"-Love (Blue Thumb): Arthur Lee, the leader of Love, is an excellent copier. Five years ago when the Byrds were big, his group was copying their style. Now that the Led Zeppelin "heavy" thing is just about burned out, Love just about has all those licks down pat. Very un-original stuff. This would have been a good album a couple of years ago. Ik BY STEVE POULSON Entertainment Editor Canned Heat I guess Canned Heat has been round just about as long as any irhite blues group. I know they 1 Were the first blues group that I ccver heard. I remember way back oil bout '65 when I first heard their lusic-before the blues revival spi.jiat happened in this country dbout 1968. ptr I was over at a friends pad; we th;; 'ere talking and he had a stack of Records playing on his turntable, ip.he first Canned Heat album jivune on it was like this: "What pi'...," "Listen to that," "Hey, Krho is this anyway?" "I have to sten to some more-I don't even li; now what I think of it." !Ej If you listen to the same album (;udw, it doesn't sound strange at ir.l-'cause everybody and his band i(Le playing heavy blues now-but Ij;. ick then it was pretty freaky. 3;, Canned Heat has been through ((ime changes since then: Lead li -litar player, Henry Vestine, split; jrie group picked up Harvey s.,andel-an incredible guitarist; Al j ilson, their slide-guitar and (outh-harp player died; and er.:stine pulled his head together yd joined the group again. Bob he Bear" Kite, the group's mammoth mam-moth personality and singer, and jmber of Music's Hall of Fame, ;;.s been with the group through- The "Bear" and the rest of the ':sw will play tonite in the Fair-Sun Fair-Sun ds Coliseum. The concert start with Southwind, a te';untry-rock band, at 8 p.m. : ";:kets are $3.50 advance, $4.50 the door. Should be a good gig. id( Saturday There's a stomp in the Ball-jljOm Ball-jljOm this Saturday night snspred by the Intercollegiate Knights. The band is the Alpha Omegas. I've never heard of them before. I dunno, it could be a burn. Admission is one bug. Mother Earth An over-18 club just opened up last night (holy wow-it really happened). The place is called Mother Earth-it's on 816 S. State. Playing this weekend are Wood-a really good group, kind of a jazz-rock jazz-rock thing-and Rose, whom I haven't heard. Admission is $2. Sounds like a really good thing-It'll thing-It'll be interesting to see how long the S.L.P.D. will let it last, and of course yours truly will be covering all the excitement right here in t.n jn. I'll let you know more after it all happens this weekend (better yet-see for yourself). Turn on with my column next Friday, same time, same place. Till then this is Stevie sayin', "Turtles, all." Records in Review "Through a Window"-Hard Meat (Warner Bros.): This is the group's second album. Their first was a typical three-piece hard rock album. Pretty dry. This one really surprised me-they've me-they've really mellowed; they've gotten into some good songs and patterns-some patterns-some fine acoustic and electric guitar playing. "Workin' Together"-Ike & Tina Turner (Liberty): Most of this album is really fine-Tina's voice and the backup back-up band are as funky as ever, and Ike has written some pretty good stuff. Only bummer is you have to sit through mediocre versions of the Beatle's "Get Back" and "Let It Be," and Creedence's "Pro u dMary." I like Ike and Tina's music, but I really don't care to hear them do other people's hits-somebody must. "Tasteful Soul"-The Main Ingredient Ingre-dient (RCA): This is a black vocal trio whose harmony is just incredible. The group has written most of their own tunes-its kind of rhythm and blues, only much mellower with more elaborate elabor-ate chords and harmony-a lot of good orchestration too. |
