Show Populations Needs Met By Research "Population growth does not always al-ways mean an increase in the well being of an area. Much of the research re-search going on at the University is necessary to help Utah solve the many problems which will be facing her as . . her population grows." This was the responsibility of the Bureau of Economic and Business Research as outlined by Osmond L. Harline, Director of the Bureau, and Associate Professor in the Department De-partment of Economics, who spoke Tuesday on "Research and Decision Making.". His speech was another in the series of Tuesday-Thursday lectures. Dr. Harline emphasized that research re-search is essential to wise decision making. He cited the example that no one had any idea how much water Utahns were consuming until un-til the Bureau undertook a study several years ago. They found that Utahns consumed 250 gallons of water per person per day. With this information it was possible to predict pre-dict the amount of water which Utah will require by 1980, and steps are now being taken to insure that the water will be available. During a question and answer period following the speech, he was questioned about the research which went into the decision on the convention center. Dr. Harline, who was been quoted by proponents of the "center said that he felt that not nearly enough research went into the decision. |
