Show SAVING MONEY FOR WHOM ? ? The News was advised this week that Beaver County motor- I ists, in ever-increasing num- j bers, are driving to Cedar City , to purchase their automobile license. They save a few dol- j tars by buying in Iron County, b.it they are violating state law which says licenses for automobiles automo-biles must be purchased in the county in which the car is used. The way they save is through the tax set-up. Iron County's overall taxes may be a few mills lower than Uiose paid here, ' but by giving a Milford or Minersville Min-ersville or Beaver City address tlte person issuing a license exempts ex-empts the purchaser from any city tax Which, to our way of thinking, is fraudulent on the part of the person issuing the license and evading rightful obligation on the part of the person purchasing it. It is fraudulent on the part of the person issuing the license because they KNOW the only reason the motorist is purchasing purchas-ing a license in a county in which they do not reside is to evade taxes. The seller thereby becomes party to a violation of law. The person buying an auto licenijp in Iron County to evade paying taxes they would be required re-quired to pay in Beaver County is asking other motorists and other taxpayers to pay an unfair un-fair extra portion of the cost of operating city government, including in-cluding police and fire protection, protec-tion, maintenance of streets and sewers and water systems, etc., and is asking others to pay the bill for educating their '.hil-dren. '.hil-dren. The greatest portion of Uie taxes we pay is for operation opera-tion of our school, and in evading evad-ing this tax motorists are refusing refus-ing to carry their portion of the expense load and many of them are at the same time howling howl-ing for better schools and better bet-ter teachers. So in "saving" a few dollars, they are hindering those who educate their children, who operate their city and county governments, and at the same time are assisting Iron County in building roads, operating their schools, eradicating their weeds, and are helping to pay the salaries of the Iron County teachers and county employes. How much are they really "saving"? |
