Show GEORGIA BETH SMITH WINS SUMMER TRIP TO UNITED NATIONS ASSEMBLY Georgia Beth Smith, daughter daugh-ter of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Smith of South Milford, was declared de-clared first-place winner in the annual Rebekah-Odd Fellow 'What the United Nations Means to Me" contest, and will receive as her prize an all-expense paid trip to the United Nations assembly in New York, sometime during the month of June. Second-place winner was Harriet Har-riet Cline, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Cline, and Susan Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Williams, took third place. Honorable mention went to Iola Young, Lynne Bracken and Doug Memmott. The Milford lodges are the only Utah lodges sponsoring a United Nations delegate individually. indi-vidually. Two other Utah students stu-dents will make the pilgrimage, co-sponsored by the other Re-be Re-be kah and Odd Fellow lodges-of lodges-of the state. Selection of the winners in the contest for the six-day trip was made after grading of written writ-ten essays and completion of a very comprehensive examination examina-tion on the United Nations. The six finalists were chosen on essay es-say grades, and each studied a voluminous kit of documentary material before taking the general gen-eral United Nations examination. examina-tion. Final selections were based on percentage grades on the essay, examination, and participation partici-pation In community affairs, scholarship, character, leadership, leader-ship, interest in church or Sunday Sun-day school activities, and general gener-al fitness for and cooperative-ness cooperative-ness with the entire project. Judging of the essays, with essays identified by number instead in-stead of name, was by Prof. Richard M. Rowley of the Division Divi-sion of Speech and English at the College of Southern Utah. Grading of the examinations was done locally, 'from examination exami-nation papers and answer sheet supplied by the Director of the United Nations Pilgrimage. Mrs. Garnet Garfield was chairman of the joint Rebekah-Odd Rebekah-Odd Fellow committee conducting conduct-ing the local contest, and was assisted by Mrs. Verna Tomsik, Mrs. Elsie Mayer, Mrs. Helen Orr, Verdon DeLeuw, Leo Mayer May-er and Warren Atkin. To give the contestants added experience' in public speaking, and additional self-confidence when facing an audience, they will be invited to address- local civic groups, fraternal organizations organi-zations and service -clubs. Georgia Beth Smith appeared before the Jaycees at their dinner din-ner meeting ' Tuesday evening, read her essay, and gave an excellent ex-cellent extemporaneous talk on the contest, the methods of selecting se-lecting the winner, and the interest in-terest she had found in the UN material which she had received. re-ceived.
