Show IRRIGATION YESTERDAY. TODAY. TOMORROW By Farrell P. Smith District Coservationist Only after having been reared rear-ed on a farm and having spent years working with "sons of the soil" do I take the liberty of writing on the subject, "Irrigation." "Irriga-tion." Writing about irrigation is a hard task, in fact, irrigation it- headgate systems on the storage reservoir, and the district cement ce-ment crew has built over 150 structures in the system and on individually owned fields to facilitate fa-cilitate efficient irrigation. In the Beaver County area, a number of mutual irrigation channels are being studied with the view of cutting down on great water losses by re-lining canals and building measuring devices. The North Creek Irrigation Irri-gation Company completed a new diversion this past season that is working fine. The Milford area, recently organized under a district, is planning to make studies of wafer losses from the Rocky Ford Reservoir, and. also, the well pumping basin below in Milford Valley. The Flowell Artesian Basin west of Fillmore has over 100 flowing wells that are being studied with a view of stopping a great loss of water thru faulty casings. self is one of the hardest tasks on the farm. The job of irrigating irrigat-ing usually starts at midnight and carries on for about two days. After irrigating all night, the victim has to carry on the regular farm work during the day. There is little wonder that the average farm boy headed for the city and an eight-hour job. The picture is changing, however, and the job of irrigating irrigat-ing has been made easier by the efforts of Soil Conservation District programs in the field. Irrigation water is the life blood of nearly every community. commun-ity. The entire community outlook out-look is based on a good or poor irrigation system. In Millard and Beaver counties coun-ties there are four soil conservation conserva-tion districts and one yet to be organized. In these two counties, coun-ties, there are over 20 mutual irrigation companies. In the Millard Soil Conservation. District Dis-trict every mutual irrigation company is cooperating with the district to improve the systems sys-tems from the watershed to the last lateral. One irrigation company has planned seven major projects to improve its system. This company, com-pany, the Scipio Irrigation Company, Com-pany, has just approved installation instal-lation of measuring devices at the inlet of the reservoir and at the outlet to determine water losses in storage. This program, when completed, will place the water users on a call system to make efficient use of all water in storage. This irrigation company has spent thousands of dollars to rebuild re-build its main channel, rebuild |
