Show New charge filed in shooting of Payson officer A new charge and dismissal of the previous charge of attempt at-tempt to commit first degree murder, was filed against John Charles Wilks, 24, Los Angeles, who had been held in the county coun-ty jail since September 2, when he was charged with the shooting of Officer Charles Warren, 42, Payson, who attempted at-tempted to stop a stolen California Cal-ifornia car on Fourth South Street near the overpass. Wilks is alleged to have jumped from the vehicle and shot officer Warren iin the head. Mr. Warren War-ren is reported in fair condition iin the Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake where he is making slow progress in his recovery. He can say some words and make various movements but his left side is- still paralyzed. M. Dayle Jeffs, Utah County attorney moved that the previous pre-vious charge against the defendant de-fendant be dismissed and a new charge, assault with intent in-tent to commit murder, which carries a statutory sentence of five years to life in the state prison, was filed. Preliminary hearing is set for December 9, at 10:30 in hopes of having Officer Warren in court for the hearing. |
