Show BYU football players set NCAB records The emergence of BYU as a respectable football power was even more apparent this week with the release of the final NCAB football statistics of the season. Six members of the Cougar squad were listed among the leaders in individual statistics, and the team also placed high nationally in three separate divisions. di-visions. Heading the group of individual individ-ual standouts was Virgil Carter, Car-ter, Cougar quarterback who copped first place honors in total to-tal offense. Carter, who set or tied a half dozen all-time NCAA marks this year, had a total of 2,545 yards rushing and passing to finish a good 250 yards ahead of the man in second place, Arizona's Mark Reed. Carter also placed eighth in forward passing with 2,182 yards. Fullback John Ogden, who won an unprecedented third rushing title in the WAC, was listed 12th in the nation in rushing. Tailback Kent Oborn was ranked third in the nation in punt returns, split end Phil Odle was 10th in the country in pass receiving, defensive back Bobby Roberts was 10th in interception returns, and Ben Laverty was ranked among the top college punters in the season just completed. As a team, the Cougars were equally impressive. BYU finished second in the nation in total offense with a 400.6 per game average. The Cougars finished behind first place Houston and ahead of third place Notre Dame in total to-tal offense. Coach Tommy Hudspeth's Cougars were ranked fifth in the nation in passing offense and 23rd in the country in rushing defense. |
