Show Fruit trees need more attention Fruit growers will need to give more attention to pruning and thinning this year. Extension Exten-sion Horticultuist Anson B. ! Call, Jr., at Utah State Uni versity explains that this is made necessary by last year's frost. Where the frost killed the fruit on peaches, sweet cherries, cher-ries, apricots and apples, last ' year, the trees grew much I more vegitation than usual. They likely will also be more I vigorous than usual this year with a heavier set of fruit. ! To get quality fruit, these trees must be pruned well and early thinning must be done. Otherwise, if there is a normal year, the set of fruit will be too heavy for the trees to support sup-port the load. Main branches will be broken, fruit will be small and off color and foilage will be too thick to do a good job of spraying. Much hand thinning will be required on stone fruits to get the quality fruit that sells best. No chemical can yet be recommended by the University Univer-sity for thinning stone fruits. Chemical thinning can be done on apples but some hand thinning thin-ning will be necessary to do a satisfactory job, Professor Call said. |
