Show Letter to the editor Reader stands on conviction for new civic center I my people, my friends, and I I want the best for you. Please strive for the "new and not the old." Twilla Newbury where ail kinds of recreation takes place. I can see them handing these plans to these fine ladies and saying, "they will be given free for such a cause." I can see other people eager to help, men offering their time and equipment, lumber and cement donated, people pledging themselves to finance the program, donations accepted, accept-ed, and all labor was offered free, free in this great town of ours. I can hear, "the new and not the old." I can see ladies grouped together, to-gether, and the men groups taking the lead. I can see their lips moving, "If we are going to finance some kind of recreation re-creation let's have a community commun-ity center with all kinds of recreation, re-creation, not the old theater." I can see newspapers broadcasting broad-casting in print what we are doing...."The finest structures in Utah County are being built in Springville!" And radio and television will catch on, and our city will be an example for others to follow. I also said to these noble women, "I don't understand why our new high school cannot can-not have a swimming pool in it. Then "all" of our youth could learn to swim and another recreational trait will be accomplished. ac-complished. Spanish Fork has one! Why can't we? They say a mentally healthy person understands himself, accepts ac-cepts what he is and likes it, feels pretty comfortable living with himself and people around him. The same can apply to a community. You are my town, There is a law we call in recreation, the law of' "start." Two lovely women came to visit me the other evening about my article in last week's paper. They were most gracious and I admired them to the hilt for what they were trying to do. They found me relaxed in a housecoat with a comforter over my feet, I wasted no time in mobilizing extra energy, I began to speak. I told them how I admired anyone who saw fit to start a recreation program, whether it was a show house or a sleigh riding track. It took work and plenty of it given freely. Whenever people live together togeth-er in any kind of a group, they must make rules to regulate their relationship. Communities have personalities. Like people, they reveal their personalities by their appearance. Therefore I can see a beautiful new center cen-ter with multiple arrangements arrange-ments of recreation being built in Springville. I can see organizations organi-zations alive and eager to work. I can see a large white structure, struc-ture, modern to fit our time; the lawns are sloping and in one area a spring of cool, clear water gliding down a man-made water-fall. And at night a rainbow rain-bow of colors are reflected by the lights flashing on it, and in the winter the caretaker uses this spring for ice sculpture. This will give our town a lasting last-ing name. And then another law in recreation re-creation comes to my mind, the law of "hope," and "challenge" to arouse the best in all men. Yes, we have hope for a great new community center, not the old. We have no challenge unless un-less we make it ourselves. Our town has its share of unemployed youths, and it has been quoted that in the United States there is over two million mil-lion young people under twenty five who are neither in school or gainfully employed. In our youth home we are having delinquent children from the age of eleven to eighteen who have time on their hands and have powerful machines like the automobile to carry them where ere they wish to go. They want recognition but have few opportunities for work or recreation. Again I told these women of my dream to come true. I can see a group of men labor over plans for this new center |
