Show Deadline set for Marine Academy tests January 31 is the deadline for accepting applications from the Utah First Congressional District for nominations to the next class at the United States Merchant Marine Academy, states Congressman Lawrence J. Burton. He is authorized to name ten qualified candidates from his district, and will receive re-ceive applications up to the deadliine. The United States Merchant Marine Academy, one of the five Federal Academies, has as its mission the education and training of qualified young citizens to become officers in the American Merchant Marine. Ma-rine. Its four-year, college-level, program leads to a Bachelor Bach-elor of Science degree, a license to sail as Third Officer, Deck or Engine, on American ships, and a commission as Ensign in the United States Naval Reserve. Re-serve. Since the creation of the Academy over 25 years ago, 34 young men from Utah have been graduated. At present, pres-ent, there are 3 young men from this state in the Corps of Cadets.
