New eject launch system designed A complete new eject launch system, designed to get the Polaris Po-laris missiles out of the sub and on the way to the traget, has been developed, using a sol-id-propellant rocket motor designed de-signed and built by Hercules Powder Company. Developed on a subcontract to the Navy's Special Projects Office, the new system substitutes steam for the compressed air system used since 1957 as the ejection method. The new ejection eliminates complex valves and plumbing, and the need for large and heavy storage flasks. The small rocket motor, mounted on the outside of the launching tube, provides the power for the launch by passing pass-ing the rocket exhaust through a water chamber, instantaneously instantane-ously changing the water to live steam. The steam and the cooled rocket exhaust are metered me-tered into the launch tube at the base of the missile and force the missile out of the submarine sub-marine and to the surface of the water where the missile's motor ignites. The small, precise motor is designed with a controlled burning rate to provide an increasing in-creasing volume of exhaust as the missile moves up the tube, thus keeping pace with the increasing in-creasing volume of space which must be pressurized to accomplish accomp-lish a successful eject. Like its predecessor the compressed com-pressed air system, the new steamgas generator is designed de-signed with a series of devices which prevent accidental or unauthorized un-authorized firing. The new rocket motor, which has launched both dummy and actual missiles from the U.S.S. Obeservation (EAG 154), has undergone extensive testing including in-cluding safety trials such as 50-foot drop tests. In addition to its safety features, the new-motor new-motor reduces maintenance re- |
