Show H realignment examined A realignment of athletic divisions that would affect both Parowan and Cedar High Schools has been proposed by a Utah High School Activities Associa tion-appointed committee. The realignment, subject of over two months of study by the committee, will be considered by the UHSAA's Legislative Council in a Nov. 10 meeting at Murray High School. The Iron County School Board approved the realignment scheme in its Oct. 21 meeting, though it wouldn't have had the power to prevent its enactment should it have desired. Representing the area at the Legislative Council meeting will be Washington County resident John Willie. Division into leagues is based on school enrollments in Grades 10-12, 10-12, unless there are prohibitive geographical considerations. Schools in the 1-A category have 0-199 0-199 students, in 2-A 200-599 200-599 students, in 3-A 600- 1399 students and in 4-A 1400 students or more. The proposed realignment, which is expected to receive Legislative Council approval with few, if any, changes, would affect Cedar High School more indirectly than directly. One region will be upgraded to 4-A status, including Bountiful, 'Cyprus, Davis, Highland, Viewmont and Woods Cross. The change will decrease the number of 3-A 3-A schools to 26. Cedar would also be competing in Region Seven, rather than Region Six. The only change likely in that region's makeup would be the addition of a 13th team--Lehi--to the region. Competition with the same divisional setup is anticipated, with Springville, Spanish Fork, Payson, Carbon, Dixie and Cedar remaining in the Southern Division. Parowan, on the other hand, could see some new rivals beginning next year. The proposed Region 12 would include 13 1-A schools, including Parowan, Beaver, Bryce Valley, Enterprise, Escalante, Gunnison, Kanab, Milford, Panguitch, Piute, Valley, Wasatch Academy and Wayne. It is likely divisions would be created within the region. Hurricane, already a 2-A 2-A school, would compete with eight other schools in a 2-A region, including North Sevier, a 1-A Region 12 member this year. The realignment would have 26 schools each in 4-A 4-A and 3-A regions, 19 in 2-A 2-A and 32 in 1-A competition. com-petition. Representing the area at the Legislative Council meeting will be Washington County resident John C. Willie. "Personally, I would like to see a closer alignment geographically, rather than by the size of the school," Willie said. "In activities other than football. I feel smaller schools could compete with the larger schools, in that most activities are individual in nature." Willie also said he would express concern at the meeting over the organization of Region Six. "For one, I feel each division should be given regional status," Willie said. "Also, I would like to see Carbon placed in the Northern Division, and have one of the northern teams come down here, so as to even up the long trips just a bit more." "Beyond that," Willie said, "I don't think I'll object." He concluded: "In 10 years, southern Utah may have its own division with similarly sized schools. Until then, I guess this will just have to do." |
