Garfield, Alger Cedar runners qualify Cedar High School's cross country team did not qualify for the state 3-A 3-A meet as a team, but two runners will represent the Redmen there. Mike Garfield and Brian Alger both placed among the top 10 runners at the regional meet Oct. 23 at Spanish Fork, thus earning the right to vie for the state crown. As a team, Cedar finished fourth in the six-team six-team field, Payson led the way with 37 points (the lowest point total wins a cross country meet). Carbon and Spanish Fork followed with 678, then came Cedar with 68. The top three teams go to the state run, meaning Cedar missed a berth by one point. Springville took fifth with 101 points, and Dixie was last with 138. Coach Bob Schex-nayder Schex-nayder was disappointed his team didn't qualify for the state meet. ".We felt going in that we might have had an outside out-side chance of even the regional championship. But we certainly should have finished second. We had finished ahead of both Carbon and Spanish Fork in earlier meets, but they both did a good job at regionals." Garfield placed third at the meet, a performance Schexnayder charac-teriezed charac-teriezed as "outstanding. Mike ran just a super race." Alger followed in sixth, partially due to the fact he developed a severe sideache during the race. "The sideache might have been a factor with Brian, as he usually places just in front of Mike." In earlier events this year, the team placed second in a four-team meet at Payson, first in a three-team meet in Cedar City and second in five-team five-team meet at Provo. |
