Black Bear Bagged A large black bear wa& bagged by Val Robb of Paragonah on June 27 in the Salina area. The big bear weighed 600 pounds and was 8' 3" tall. The skull measurement is expected to be registered in "Bonne and Crockett," a skull measurement registry of the 15th largest ever recorded for a black bear. The skull must be dried for 60 days before an official measurment will be accepted. ac-cepted. Robb said he trailed two bears, one smaller and the one he finally bagged for 10 miles with his hunting dogs. When the dogs treed the bear, it climbed to the top of a large pine tree, Robb said. It took four shots from a seven MM magnum to finally bring the bear down. Robb is a licensed guide, and will start guiding for . bear hunters in the fall. Bear Hunts are from Apr. 16 to July 30 and from Sept. 1 to Oct. 15. Robb stated that all bears now found in Utah are black bears, though they may vary in color from almost blonde to coal black. Recent sightings have reported a bear in the vicinity of Yankee Reservoir, near Parowan, that is gold in color, Robb said. Robb said he will also be guiding cougar hunts. Cougar season is year round in southern Utah. He has killed over 300 cougars in his hunting career. His hunting companions on the bear hunt were sons Shawn and Chris, Ken Bess, and Val and Lyle Barton. |
