Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery to Feature Quilt Exhibit hours were made possible by Friends of the Gallery, a citizens organization dedicated to supporting cultural events in the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery. The Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery, on the campus of Southern Utah State College announced that a unique textile exhibition, will be on display today through Aug. 10. The exhibition will open with a public reception 7 to 9 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. In referring to the exhibition, Thomas A. Leek, SUSC art curator, stated, "The craftsmanship of traditional quilting is combined in an extraordinary ex-traordinary way with the artistry of contemporary printmakers in this exhibition of 20 quilts. Historical precedents are relatively few for quilts made of hand-printed materials. "Printed Quilts-Quilted Prints, however, offers a fine example of the variety possible with the creative use of unusual fabrics and the techniques of etching, engraving, photo-lithography, photo-lithography, silkscreen and cyanotype (blue printing). Much of the actual quilting was done by members of the Ohio Amish community, although several were completed by the artists themselves, showing their affinity with traditional decorative arts," Leek said. The exhibition is on loan from the Pratt Graphics Center in New York City. Special, extended gallery hours, during the Utah Shakespearean Festival, are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and 1 to 7 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The extended |
