Show Say Census Figures Iron County Growth Spurts Iron County is growing even faster than the ra pid ra te of growth reported for the entire state of Utah, according to preliminary 1980 Census figures. While the state's has grown 35 percent to nearly 1.5 million in the 1970's, Iron County's population has jumped 41 percent, from 12,177 in 1970 to 17,163 in 1980, say the figures. The tabulations are 'preliminary and solely for review purposes," says the Census Bureau, but are historically close to final, official figures reported to their headquarters in Washington, D.C. The largest city in the county, Cedar City, also reports the smallest rate of growth between 1970 and 1980 Census. According to the preliminary Census figures, Cedar City population stands at 10,881, up 22 percent from the 9,720 reported in 1970. Parowan remains the county's second largest town, with 1,829 residents, up 34 percent from 1,423. Enoch township has become the county's third largest town, with 679 people counted in 1980. This represents a whopping 466 percent jump oyer the 120 reported in 1970. Other towns, with populations reported are Paragonah, 305 in 1980, up 11 percent from 275 in 1970; Kanarraville, 252 in 1980, up from 0 in 1970. Other county towns were not assigned population figures in the . preliminary report. The county's 17,000 residents are divided into three divisions for Census purposes. The Cedar City Division, comprising the southeast corner of the county, reports the largest growth over the past 10 years. From 9,720 people in 1970, the division has jumped 43 percent to 13,901 in the latest count. Next in terms of growth is the Parowan Division, the northeast corner. A 34 percent increase in population, from 1,900 to 2,542 has occurred in the 1970's. Finally, the Beryl-Newcastle Division, made up of the western end of Iron County, has grown from 557 to 720 residents, an increase of 29 percent. per-cent. Also included in the preliminary figures was a count of county housing units. From 3,728 in 1970, units have grown to 6,000 a 61 percent increase. Some 904 of these units, or 15 percent, , were vacant when the Census was taken. |
