Show Deputy sofo off ojmloGiuo A mighty blast and a cloud of dust shook Pine Valley Monday, when Deputy Den-nix Den-nix Cox and Wally Fother-ingham Fother-ingham set off a charge of nitro, probably left by a seismic exploration crew. On Saturday, Noal Wood, Minersville, of Wood and Eyre Cattle Company, discovered dis-covered a cylindrical red tube, three inches in diameter di-ameter and four feet long, about five miles south of the Wood and Eyre Cabin, on U-21 in Pine Valley. Inspection revealed that the tube was filled with 60 percent Nitro glycerine, and should not be handled. Wood notified Deputy Cox. Monday morning Cox and Fotheringham accompanied Wood to the tube. Determining Deter-mining that it was too dangerous dan-gerous to leave, they were hesitant to try and move it. Stepping back about 75 yards to a corral, Cox fired seven shots from a .22 calibre cali-bre rifle into the tube. Nothing Noth-ing happened. Another inspection in-spection showed that each shot had hit the tube. They returned to the corral cor-ral and Cox fired his .257 handgun at the tube. The second shot brought a blast that blew them over backward. |
