Show and V Home k J Dr. Daryl J. McCarty Executive Secretary Utah Education Association If you could be anyone in the whole world, Who would you be? That's the .uestion that a poll from Instructor Magazine Mag-azine asked children aged 8-12 8-12 across the nation. Sure, some of the boys said they'd like to be football star Roger Staubach, others said they'd want to be President of the United States, and one said he Wanted to be the best surgeon in the world. The girls? Some wanted to be such persons as TV star Cheryl Ladd, their mothers, or a rich person. The interesting thing about the poll, is that the greatest number of kids who responded respond-ed didn't want to be any of those people. Their answer was that if they could be anybody in the whole world, they would be themselves. If that's the feelingof most youngsters in this country, it should make optimists of us all. That's because success suc-cess in many things school, careers, athletics, homemaking, etc often springs from a person feeling feel-ing good about himself. Teachers call it a good self image. They work to convince young people they ' are somebodies some- bodies who are capable of succeeding at school tasks. ' Teachers keep an eye on students who don't seem to have a good self image. When that youngster finally grasps a tOugh long division concept, con-cept, the teacher explodes. "You DID it!" "I'm proud of you!" That student's I self confidence, self satis - faction and self image will soar. From then on its likely that every math problem prob-lem won't seem to be an un-climable un-climable mountain to the kid. Things will go better. |
