I consider much of our foreign aid program to be wasteful and unproductive; giving foreign aid to a nation na-tion which refuses to stand with us in a time of crisis Is indefensible. I intend to take an even closer look at funds which are earmarked for countries which do not support the eco -nomlc sanctions. Saying its time for our real friends to stand up and be counted, U.S. Senator Jake Garn threw his support behind be-hind a Senate resolution which would authorize the President to cut off trade benefits to countries that do not back U.S. econom ic sane -tlons against Iran. The purpose of this legislation legis-lation is to send a message mes-sage to those governments govern-ments who believe they can sit on the sidelines while American citizens continue to be held hostage with the sanction of the government of Iran. The message is, simple: either you are with us or against us and we will modify our trade agreements agree-ments accordingly. Under the resolution, the president may impose sharply higher tariffs on an offending nations exports to the U.S. as well as deny the federal procurement of goods from that country. As a specific example, the senator noted that within hours of the announcement of the sanctions, New Zealand Zea-land announced plans to reopen re-open Its Tehran embassy. I simply cannot accept such an attitude in light of what the U.S. has done for the western nations in the past. American soldiers have given their lives to se- |
