Show E21D2E DO Ul7nnifl errorless stfaaaHy Governor Matheson went against his Wilderness Study Committee last week and recommended to the Forest Service and Congress only one Wilderness Area in Utah. That one is a near vertical gulch in Garfield County, Box Canyon Wilderness Area. All 29 Utah Counties, at the Association of Counties meeting, had voted for no wilderness wilder-ness In Utah. The Governor's Advisory Committee on Wilderness, had gone along with the Forest Service proposal and accepted all proposed wilderness areas, including three in Beaver County. Piute County was almost completely surrounded,, j with onlythesmallcommunitiesnotincluded in Wilderness areas. Time for comment on RARE II to the Forest Service is past. But concerned citizens should make their feelings known to Senators Garn and Hatch andCongress-i andCongress-i men Marriott and McKay. It is in Congress that the final decision will be made. In conversation with Senator Garn last week, he said, "We must have input from Utahns in Washington, so we can convince other members of Congress that more wilderness wil-derness in the West is not needed." He feels that some compromise will be necessary but the more mail received opposing RARE II Wilderness the better position western legislators will be in to negotiate for less wilderness. Most western legislators oppose the massive wilderness designations, and know that soon BLM will add even more in the near future, when their studies are completed com-pleted and they submit their proposal. With the exception of a few western legislators like Mo Udall(D -Ariz.), western legislators are in concert with their constituents. con-stituents. They understand public lands. But they are greatly outnumbered by legislators legis-lators from states with little or no public lands. They need your support to keep public lands open for multiple use. Don't wait another day write to them now, and write often, to give them the support they need to fight the battle in Washington. "Red" |
