Show Tigers Edge 3-Point Win Over Beaver The Tigers had foul trouble from the start, with Raines l icking up two big ones in thd first quarter and coming back in each quarter only long enough en-ough to pick up another foul. He played just over five min-. utes. But fortunately another soph-cmore, soph-cmore, played the whole game ?nd without him the outcome might well have been different. Kevin Barnes, who as a fresh-' man last year e.n the JV went against the .same two Beaver Guards, Greg Gurr and Chuck Ashworth. Last year when they were juniors they tore him apart, this years, sophomore against seniors, Kevins had full command of the situation. The seniors, no slouches as ball players, couldn't contain the young guard. Barnes didn't score but nine points, but he was the key to Milford's ball control. Tommy Mayer rebounded well and gave the Tigers control con-trol of the boards, despite Jimmy Jim-my Raines spending most of the evening on the bench. Richacd Smith led the scoring wi'h 15 and most of them came in the first half. In the second half Robt. Edwards came on and dunked 12 of his 14. the best effort Robt. has turned in this year. We'll expect more from him the rest of the year. Mayer hit for 14 also, mostly on tip-ins and Raines got 6, just walking back and forth to the bench. Workman dumped 2 before he fouled out. There were 21 fouls called on the starting five, with Workman fouling out in relief. Smith and Barnes had 3 each. Leading the scoring was Bry-and Bry-and Eyre of Beaver. Rureel Al-brccht Al-brccht had 11 for the Beavei s. The scoring was fairly even, with Beaver leading 11-9 at the quarter. Milford gained a little ground and lead 28-25 at the half and almost had it iced 45-37 at the three-quarter mark. But, with Raines drawing his fifth foul in less than a minute of the fourth quarter gone and Mayer, Edwards and Workman each falling by the wayside, Coach Neilsen wound up the game with a freshman, two sophomores, a junior and a senior, and a three point lead, 60-57. Barnes was the only starter left in the game. Gurr was the only casualty of personals on the Beavers. The Beavers gave a gcod fight right to the finish. Milford hit only 32 to Beaver's Beav-er's 35 from the field, but got 10 more shots. The Beavers hit 21 of 33 free tosses to Mil-ford's Mil-ford's 20 for 30. In the JV game, Dilford was up tight at the beginning and fell to a 12-0 lead before finding find-ing their first bucket. At the half the score was 17-19 wi'.h Beaver still leading. In the third quarter, Milford tcok the lead twice, but couldn't hold it and succumbed to the opponents oppon-ents in the final period. Last night, Wednesday, the Tigers traveled to Lincoln County, Nevada and results were not known at press tinv. Next Friday, Dec. 29 they go to Escalante for the first meeting meet-ing with that club this year. They are touted high with a 6'6" center. On January 5th they will meet Kanab here for the next league game. |
