Dr. Thomas J. Quigley, director di-rector of VA's outpatient clinic in Boston, said 160 of the octogenarians have been examined and studied there to date and they appear 20 to 25 years younger than their actual ac-tual age. Spanish-American War veterans, vet-erans, they seem typical of some 1600 remaining veterans of that waf living in Massachusetts, Massa-chusetts, Dr. Quigley said. According to the estimates based on mortality tables, and on life-span increases due to modern medicine, about 500 not 1600 Massachusetts veterans vet-erans of the Spanish-American war should be alive today, he explained. VA doctors are probing the "why" of their long life in search of "leads" to the treatment treat-ment and care of all " aging veterans as well as non-veterans. The Boston clinic is studying study-ing in detail the physical and emotional condition, diet, history, his-tory, and life circumstances of Massachusetts Spanish-American War "youngsters.". VETS WHO WAIVED PENSION MAY RECONSIDER ACTION Veterans between 50 and 65, entitled to both VA service ser-vice connected compensation and nonscrvice connected pension, pen-sion, who waived pension and chose compensation in order to avoid deductions from their social security total disability payments, may now rescind the waiver, VA announced. VA pointed out that this would affect only those veterans vet-erans who had actually waived their pensions to receive a larger payment from social security. A comparatively small number of veterans is included in his group. Social security payments are in no way affected by VA compensation payments. But under the old law, VA pension payments were -subtracted from any monthly social security se-curity disability payment. Thus, a veteran entitled to either compensation or pension pen-sion would waive his pension in order to collect full social security payment plus his compensation. The new law allows the payment pay-ment of both social security and VA pension. Thus, if pension payments exceed compensation com-pensation payment the veteran veter-an must notify VA of his desire de-sire to rescind his waiver and collect the pension payments again. Such payments cannot be retroactive and will be effective effec-tive from the day. VA receives notice to rescind the prior waiver. Full information may be obtained ob-tained in any VA office. |
