The senator noted that although al-though the Secretary of Commerce Com-merce apportioned $30 million in fiscal 1959 forest highway funds to the states last November, Novem-ber, the Bureau of the Budget denied the states permission to obligate the apportioned funds. In a letter to Budget Director Percival Brundage, Sen. Bennett Ben-nett said, "Our economy has undergone un-dergone considerable change since early November, so it may now be wise to permit the states to go forward on the forest highway program." Senator Bennett said that of the 716 miles of forest highways in Utah, 435 miles are "in critical crit-ical shape. ' Included in the roads which would probably have high priority pri-ority if the'release of funds is approved, according to Senator Bennett, are State Highway 153 east of Beaver. |
