Weber has always had a sluing basketball tradition and has sent many of it's coaches on to bigger schools or into the professional ranks. Dick Motta coached here for six years, winning 78 percent of the time, he is now the third win-ningest coa,ch in NBA history. Phil Johnson won 81 percent of his games at Weber and is now an assistant coach with the Utah Jazz. Weber State fans hope to have another winning coach in the new WSU Head Basketball Coach Ron Abegglen. Abegglen has spent the last five seasons turning the University of Alaska-Anchorage into one of the most successful NCAA Division Two programs in the nation. His record says it all: 109 wins, 45 losses (.707). The Alaskan Sea wolves made the NCAA Division Two play-offs four of Abegglen's five seasons, includinga trip to the 1988 Division Two national championship game, where UAA finished second in the nation. During Abegglen's reign at UAA, the Sea wolves knocked off a number of Division One powers such as Auburn, Texas, and Washington. But none was as big as the 70-66 win over then unbeaten and eventual national champion, Michigan, during the 1988-89 season. While Abegglen is making his debut as a Wildcat, he is no stranger to the Wasatch Front. A native of Vernal, he began his coaching career at Morgan High, where he guided the Trojans to a win-loss record of 232-88 (.725) in 13 seasons. His 1973-74 team posted a 26-0 record and won the state Class A championship. The record speaks for itself. Where Ron Abegglen goes, success follows. Weber State hopes that trend will continue.
