Show 'Running Sacred' pulls back the curtains of lyrical mastery By Jennifer Harding Asst. Arts editor of The Signpost Ex-punk and ex-lead vocalist of the ex-underground band X, Exene Cervenka, has executed her second solo album "Running Sacred' and this excursion can only be described as sheer excellence. If you feel trapped in an inchoate musical world of prerecorded concerts and prepubescent nightmares on your block then Exene Cervenka is just the angelic key-master of impromptu you need. With an alley cat-like voice scintillating the senses with melo-poetic, raucous lyrical plashings, this CD brings Cervenka's new solo style to aboil and adds much of her former band's sound, a mixture that works beautifully. Cervenka alongside Steve Wynn of the "Dream Syndicate' and Clive Gregson and Christine Collister has just finished her nationwide tour which included Salt Lake City. "I don't like making conscious decisions," said Cervenka, in a Rhino Records press release. 'They don't have any place in art." "Running Scared," marks a new peak for the ex-X singer who seems more natural and vivacious then she did in her former years. She marks the years to her advantage collaborating and manipulating different styles. Recently she performed on 'Tame Yourself," a compilation of various artists for PETA. Her other solo effort nearly two years ago was entitled "Old Wives Tales," marking the beginning of a lucra- PRINCESS (continued from page 10) less is played by Bob Moon, another WSU student. Other Weber State students include Marie Moon, Vondell Hathaway, Lisa Whitaker, and Joel Taniguchi designing the set. "Mattress," written by Jay Thomson, Marshall Barer and Dean Fuller with music composed by Mary Rodgers, is directed by Vince O'Neil and will be performed in the "half-round" at the Club Emporium at 204 West 36th Street, in Riverdale, just north of the Newgate Mall. It opens May 16, 17and20at7:30p.m.witha special matinee performance on Saturday, the 18th. Tickets are $4 for students and senior citizens and $5 for adults. For an evening of fun everyone will enjoy, plan to attend this light-hearted romp through a fairy tale world. There's only one way to come out ahead of the pack. 1 V u American Heart J 1 Association tive solo career. On the CD the first track is "Slave Labor," an instantaneous denotation that forwardly addresses the daily, drab routine of going to work. With lyrics like: "Everyone has aboss My boss is my heart So you see I can't ever quit my job But will you fire me?" Cervenka excoriates with intensity and fiery meaning. Another song entitled "Red Dirt," shows her new improved style excellently. It begins with soft innocence with lyrics like "I'm goin' to Arizona, to dry my eyes Desert please take me, to the water" and then out of nowhere she bangs in an raw X-like chorus, the dron-ings that any X fan or any other type of music lover would appreciate. "Real Estate," a very heavy undermining use of guitars by Tony Gilkyson accentuates Exene's bohemian cooings with complacency. She sings 'There are homes in the skySo high that nobody can touch....We came here looking for the new eyes in the new faces Of the holy vagabonds in the magic hobo show." The lyrical resonance melts deliciously into the mystical musical backdrops. Cervenka's voice has gained a lot of power over the years ranging in power prose from a raw and obstreperous twang from her earlier day's towell-defined ballads. "Curtains," documents the 20th century morality with twangy, schizophrenic poesy. Cervenka points an objective finger at the world which she says has become sleazy and merciless. Prophetic lyrics like: "Here it ) - - j ' t . i A V - , km EXENE CERVENKA, former member of the underground, semi-punk band X, shows competence and versatility as solo artist with her rave-reviewed second solo effort "Running Scared." comes again a sleaziness and easiness And you know the rest How a dimes worth of desire can spend your whole life overnight." The curtains in this song seem to represent barriers of ignorance put up by people. Other lyrics later on define this motive. "She thought she wanted to dieBut she wasn't certainShe didn't call it the facts of lifeShe didn't call it curtains." In the album themes of abortion, religion, co-dependency are touched on with delicate poetry yet are delivered with heavy undertones creating clever combination.
