Thompson is one of many events that the University Advancement departments organized during the school year. University advances from college with physical changes, events By Tamera Ostler Staff writer of The Sgnpost The preparation from a college to a university did not require substantive changes, said WSU Vice President of University Advancement William C. Loos. After the governor signed the bill on Feb. 14, 1990, the name didn't go into effect until Jan. 1 1991. Most changes had already taken place years before, Loos said. "We were a university prior to 1991," Loos said, "we just didn't have the name. "The name change was needed because many mistook Weber State as a two- year community college." Loos said the change is far more descriptive as to what WSU really is. 'The university status was to recognize what the school has already done," Loos said. 'The mission statement will not change, the institution will continue to be a teaching one and will not go into research."The few changes that did take place, were subtle ones said Loos. "A new letterhead and business cards had to be made, a new front sign had to be put up, and all highway signs were changed by the state." Loos says a committee is currently reevaluating the university seal and logos. "There has been extreme inconsistency in the past, with the use of these symbols, and in order to establish any credibility as a uni versity, there needs to be consis tency. 'The University is taking part in a corporate identity program in order to adapt the correct use of the seal, and to what style the seal and logo should actually be," he said. The New Years' University celebration is when the revised version of the stonegate was unveiled.'The new sign was a very important part of this transition," Loos said, "because it represents the institution's changing eras. "When the sign was first donated by the Ogden Rotary Club in 1952, it read 'Weber College.' Then, years later, it was changed to Weber State College and today it reads Weber State University." "That sign has meant a lot to Weber State over the years," Loos GENERAL STUDIES EMPHASIS WEEK 1991 SERVICES HERE TO HELP YOU!
