Show Editorial Student athletics mix well with high academic standards at Weber State To the editor We as WSU studentathletes would like to respond to the article that was in reference to the panel discussion on "Athletes and Academics: do they Mix?" Our first comment is that athletics and academics do mix! Allow us to ask Mr. Holt the question, "How are the majority of universities across the country recognized? The answer is by their successful athletic programs, not by their successful academic programs. Weber State is known because of its past athletic programs and the success that they have had! Not to say that Weber State doesn't have a great academic record because we do. Our nursing, education, psychology, and many other programs are the best in the state of Utah, if not the country. Another point we would like to make is that studentathletes are the individuals who support Weber State in the numerous activities on and off the campus that our university is involved with. The studentathlete is the first one to come to the aid of WSU and to point out the good in attending this great university. We have come to Weber State from many different countries, and cultures to gain an education and make a name for Weber State and the state of Utah through our athletic achievements. We have brought a lot to this university and don't appreciate being told that weare not needed or that we are not an important aspect of college life. How can a student become a well rounded individual without the association with college athletics! Besides the fact that we as studentathletes (and if you haven't caught on yet, we are students!), bring a name to Weber State, we also have a great academic record. Many of our athletic teams have an overall CPA of 3.5 or higher. We as athletes are required to maintain a high academic stand dent of mine. Each time a special situation presented itself, Oliver gave that special attention to my situation. Whether an expert was needed to assist in a panel discussion at my school, or a friend for a particular student who was really struggling in high school, Oliver found time out of his schedule to be there for me. ing for participation in our selective sports. The studentathletes at WSU take their education seriously! We are here to get an education and what better way than through the use of special talents that we have been blessed with! In conclusion, we would like to state that our athletic programs are far from being only entertainment since no one ever comes to support us. We support ourselves andparticipatebecausewewantto gain an education and weenjoy our sports! We also would like to say that we would have liked the opportunity to have expressed our opinions at this discussion. As hard working, dedicated and proud studentathletes of Weber State University, it is our opinion that athletics is an extremely important aspect of college life! I also think some of the funds need to go to fund the library at least to keep it open until midnight. " Ahab Okal EET - Senior "I think it's both. It's important because every school has a team that reflects its athletic interests. On the other hand, it's not important to take funds from educational and research. We need it more." Osama Dawood Engineering Physics - Senior "Sports are needed but academics should come first and atheletes shouldn't be given special priveleges. College should prepare us for the job market, not recreation. We don't need to become a University of Wyoming" Dwight Stolte Computer Science - Senior "Yes, I think sports are a very important part of the Weber State curriculum because of the discipline and self-confidence it instills in the athlete." While some big schools may make too much out of them, I think that the competition and sportsmanship that athletics include are a benefit at WSU."
