Show 7 Smith reports mission statement not affected by university name By Christine Rasmussen U.Posf editor of Tho Signpost According to Vice President of Academic Affairs Robert D. Smith, notable progress has been achieved since Weber State University adopted a new mission statement in 1988. At an Open Forum discussion in November, Smith said that enrollment management, student skills and understanding, outcome assessment and faculty vitality are some of the issues that the strategic planning committee focuses on and included into the revised mission statement of WSU addresses. The mission statement reads that "...The chief mission of the University is to meet the educational needs of Utah through roles asssigned by the state Board of Regents in the liberal arts and sciences and a variety of vocations and professions. Primarily committed to quality undergraduate education, . . . (and) includes some advanced professional prepera-tion.""During fall quarter, the faculty senate approved a new definition of academic standards, and the Board of Regents will approve the changes proposed. "All of the academic majors were asked to review their programs and make changes if required," Smith said. "I challenged each of the departments to ask themselves what the meaning of a degree from Weber State is." Smith said the purpose was to generate the well defined reputation that WSU has with its programs and to continue the school's recognition as a good institution. 'The state will not set the re quirements for each of the departments, the Board of Regents will report to the governor on each of the institutions success," Smith said. By letting the schools set their own precedents for their own programs, it is able to fulfill its perceived needs. Assistant vice president created for By Jennette L. Turbin Staff writer of The Signpost As the new Assistant Vice President for Community and Economic Partnerships, Ann Millner is accustomed to long work days. Rarely in her office located in Promontory Tower, Millner docs most of her work off-campus with various business and people from the community. Millner's position was created for university involvement with planning and developing partnerships between surrounding business. This helps both the students and the companies to improve operations by creating the proper training for students in conjunction with the needs of local companies. "Weber State is a metropolitan university," Millner said," what we do on campus should help the community, and vice-versa." By offering a co-op situation, students are able to stay in school, continue their education and help the company and improve the local economy. 'There are three over-all responsibilities that I have," Millner said. "Internal partnership activities, establishing open doors and find a way to access resources and to look at what else we should be doing to bring our programs - .1 - t I, DR. ANN MILLNER together." Millner said that these three responsibilities break off to many more responsibilities to complete her job successfully. Millner receives help from the coordinators who are assigned to each activity, but she still is responsible for working with them and making sure everything is in its proper place. "Hike the challenge of creating new things," Millner said, "It's fun to watch it all happen!" "I keep picking up jobs, I don't know if I'll ever lose jobs." Millner says she is always busy finding work to be done where ever she goes. Millner received her doctoral degree in educational administration from BYU. She came to WSU nine years ago and worked in the Allied Health Department and Continuing EducationDepartment. BELOW IS A COMPLETE LIST OF EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT GETTING A STUDENT LOAN.
