Show Honors society accepts 1 70 new members to join By Joyce Zabriskie Senior reporter of The Signpost The Phi Kappa Phi Honor society welcomed 170 new members into the society at a ceremonial banquet Thursday. WSU President Paul H. Thomspon was the keynote speaker. Thompson said that learning was a lifetime activity. "Many have the mistaken impression that learning is only between the ages of five years to 23 years and that there is no need to go any further' he said. "That view is never accepted. It is more dangerous with each passing year." Thompson said that education does not just prepare one for a job but prepares them for life. The purpose of the society is to recognize people for their excellence in academic achievements in all academic diciplines. The society encourages undergraduates to excel through awards of scholarships and fellowships.Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, the society was incorporated in 1969 to support first-year graduate work and offers 50 fellowships and 30 honorable mention awards on a competitive basis. This year two scholarships were awarded to Tracy Shannon Wheatley and Matthew Weeks. New honor society officers were elected for the coming year, including Dr. Nancy Hanstaad of political science and philosophy as president, Dr. Lee McKenzie of the English department as president-elect, and Dr. Inge Adams-Nelson of the foreign language department as vice president. Society members are elected for the top 1 0 percent of the senior year and the top 5 percent of the junior class. This year over 400 people were invited to join the society and 170 were accepted. News editor of The Sgnpost The faculty senate, which will meet this Thursday, will discuss a new policy that may change the teacher workload requirements from a credit-hour per quarter base to a credit-hour annual base. "It's a policy that provides just a little bit more leeway in the assignment of faculty time on the part of the department chair and the dean," said Faculty Senate Chair Thomas Burton. Burton said the current faculty workload policy states that teachers are expected to carry between 9 to 15 credit hours per quarter with 12 credit hours considered a full load. Faculty are teaching an average of 36 hours per academic year. Burton said there is no significant change in the current policy. The new policy states that full-time tenure or tenure-track faculty will be expected to teach 32 to 36 credit hours per academic year. "Anything over 36 hours will be paid as overload, and anything under 32 hours will be supplemented with other assignments," he said. Also, the new policy states that non-tenure track faculty may be required to teach up to 40 credit hours per academic year. The policy, originating from the salaries committee, is compa rable with other universities in the area, said Dr. Bruce Handley, chairman of the salaries, benefits, budget and fiscal planning of the faculty senate. Even though the faculty at Weber State carries a heavier work load than that of the University of Utah, it is expected of them because WSU is a teaching institution, he said. The new policy, along with other items on the agenda will be discussed at this Thursday's Faculty Senate meeting at 2:30 p.m. in the Wattis Business Building, room 122. It will either be approved or referred back to the committee. If the policy is approved, it will go before the institutional council. STUFF (continued from page 5) nothing she does can arouse him.
