Show Wednesday, May 22, lyyi LITHUANIA (continued from page 1) video footage of several demonstrations which they conducted separately and in concert with other Lithuanian civilians against Soviet occupation. They whooped and shouted as they pulled down statues of Lenin and KGB agents that had been erected in their country. They participated in demonstrations where Lithuanian citizens mocked the Soviet troopsby dressing in uniforms and marching down the streets in rag tag formation, shouting mock commands to each other. These youth also participated in the demonstrations that led up to the events of Jan. 13. They were among the tens of thousands of Lithuanians who surrounded the press building, radio tower and parliament buildings in Vilnius, the capitol of Lithuania, situated about one hour west of Kaunas. The Lithuanians are committed to nonviolent opposition. Within six hours of the first call for help, the first of them arrived by bus in Vilnius. They formed several rings around the buildings, sang folk-songs and encouraged the young Soviet soldiers to go home to their families. VaideTamosiunaite, 19, a student work- $ 'wrn.- i l A V Hi . The Lithuanians had no idea that Soviet soldiers would go to the lengths they did to take the buildings, said Liucija Baskauskas, pro-rector of Vytautas Magnus University. Eimutis Sakalauskas, 23, paused the video tape as it focused in on the guns the young Soviet soldiers were carrying, and pointed to the bolts of the guns. 'That's open," he said. 'They are ready to fire." Sakalauskas served in the Soviet military as do all young men in the Soviet Union. It was obvious from the looks on the young soldiers guarding the radio station and press building that they did not want to be there. Special shock forces, trained to kill and terrorize the people, were moved in on Jan. 13. As they shot into thecrowds and the tanks moved in, the Soviets told the crowds over a public announcement system things such as "Co home to your children, they are waiting for you. We are here to give your freedom. There is nothing happening here." Footage of the carnage was graphic. Of the 14 people who lost their lives on Jan. 13, one was a young woman crushed by a tank. Lorctta, 22, regained consciousness and asked whether she would be able to marry and have children. She died two hours later. Many other people were wounded by gunfire and beatings. From 10 to 15 thousand people surrounded the radio tower, one to two thousand surrounded the press building and another 80 thousand surrounded the parliament building. 'There would have been mass murder at the parliament building if the Soviet government hadn't realized that the story was being broadcast to the western world by the Kaunas TV station," Baskauskas said. The delegation conducted seminars on democracy, student government and student newspapers to the students at WSU's sister school, Vytautas Magnus University. Information was also given to help in the administration of the 2-year-old school.
