Show GRANT STATUE UNVEILED. Gift of the G. A. II. to the Nation Accepted by Congress. A statue of General U. S. Grant was unveiled in the rotunda of the national capitol Saturday. It is a gift of the G. A. R. veterans to the nation. Work of collecting funds for the statute was commenced in 1S85. None butG. A. R. men were permitted to contribute, and qo contribution of more than 15 cents was accepted. The ceremonies were witnessed by few save officials and members of the Grantfamily. Eulogies ot the great soldier were delivered in both branches of congress by veterans of both the Union and Confederate armies. The statute is surrounded by those of Jefferson, Hamilton and Lincoln, in a more honored position than is generally gen-erally accorded. |
